Id be afraid to guess whether you will actually get any useful help from the NARA....it seems to depend on the employee who handles your request how thorough a job may get done...When you write, give them all the info you can - I am certain they have shelves of records from II corps, so the problem will be to isolate the relevant portions...
From the campaigns you mention your Dad was in, (I cant recall and have no references handy), it seems he would have been with II corps through most of the war.I suppose they would have been the most experienced corps staff anywhere in the US Military, which was why they went from Italy into the southern France landings - the "Second D-Day" in August 1944, and finished the war as part of 7th Army. There werent that many Americans on the ground in the ETO before then, so experience at every level was prized.
One course Ive heard might be productive....when a vet lived to get home, usually the VA got a copy of his records, especially if he had any service-connected conditions requiring treatment.I have heard, but never tried myself, that the VA sometimes has records otherwise lost in the fire, so that might be worth a try for you too.
Best of luck.
