Carlile - Letter from Italy, March 8th - Help please.
While going through my late husbands papers I found this letter to his mother from his uncle. The envelope is missing so I don't know the year but I am guessing it is 1944 since he mentions being 400 yds west of Cassino Monastery and under heavy artillery fire.Following is that letter.I thought some of you interested in WW2 would like to see it; I hope you find it worth reading.
I would like to know if anyone can help me pinpoint where, when or who he's with and advise me as to how to find out more about him. I'm working on a family history for our daughter and granddaughter and this man deserves our family's recognition.
Thank you in advance for any assistance you may provide,
Italy March 8th
How are you?I'm fine, all except my nerves.I'm still pretty well shook up.My friend "Herman the German" caught me on the side of a Bare --- Mt. about 400 yds west of the famous Cassino Monastery that you have probaly read about in the papers. And he shot every thing but the kitchen zinck at me.He was shooting one of those German 88s at me which will shoot 15 miles and he was less than a 1,000 yds from me and the shell weighs about 75lbs and is very highly exsplosive every time one passed over me about 3 foot above my head it would suck me about 3 in. off the ground and finaly one hit about 4 foot from me I guess.I didn't take time to measure tho. and the results are I'm in the hospital now.If you see any of the guy's who have been in Combat over here and I've heard that a few of the Waco [Texas] boy's are back home. Just ask them about the Jerry's 88.I was lucky tho. I was one of 12 that was left out of a company of 200.I hope my luck holds out.If I ever see any of this Country except it's icy mountains and it's bomb shattered town's I'll try to write about something besides the War.You couldn't possibly have any Idea how tired a fellow can get of all this.24 hrs. a day tryin to kill or keep from being killed and then when Jerry cracks you up which he will eventualy do if you are in the front line Infantry. You come back to the hospital untill your able to fight again and then back you go.I've read in the papers and magazines here at the hospital that the war will soon be over. The war has never started for those guys who write that kind of stuff. It will soon be over allright, "All but the fighting"It makes me sick how the new's papers describe the front lines the people back in the states probaly think the Germans aren't firing a shot.If they do think that tell them they better think again.I'm sorry I haven't written sooner but as you see I don't know nothing worth writting about and I'm so fed up with all this that I dont know anything else to write.Tell Tommy Lynn Dub said hello and if you have any late pictures of him I'd sure like to have one.Tell Shelby I said to write me.Did Mildred realy get married again? If you see any of the old gang tell them I said write are tell them to go hell if you want too it dont make me any diff.Just However you feel when you meet them.Write soon and tell me all the news.As Ever W.B.C.
