I have found just today that the USS 'Bellawood' (listed as a submarine in the Ball/Crump Family publication) was inerror. The ship was actually USS Belleau Wood (CVL-24) an Independence-Class Light Carrier formerly the USS New Haven.

This information you may already know. It was my understanding that Carl died on 30OCT44 when the Japanese Zero was shot down in a kamikazee attempt yet still hit the deck, penetrating into the munitions hold, causing an explosion killing Carl and 91 other men in the event.
