need help with Croix du Guerre
Hi there,I am trying to find my great grandfathers WWII records. I have found records for WWI as he was in both wars. Here is the problem. His legal name was Valade, however somehow his wife and sons took on the name DeLaval, and that is what our family goes by. Anyways I have seen a newspaper clipping from approx 1942 stating the he was a German POW and 'alive and well in Martinique France'. It goes on to say that before he was captured he won the Croix du Guerre, and that he was a machine gunner.I have a contact in Ottawa doing look-ups for me and they are sending the WWI records which are under the name Valade or DeLaval, however can find noone for those names in WWII.I have also tried a contact with the French Govt to no avail. I have basically pinned it down to him probably being with the 1st Canadian division during WWII, but where do I go from there? I was hoping to be able to trace him through his medal but am having zero luck. Any help you are able to provide would be much appreciated.
