I'll try to help, Patti. I am not 100% certain on this info, but I'll give you my ideas.
9201st TSU TC Det 21 Cp Shanks NY is 9201st Tactical Service Unit, Training Command, Detachment 21, Camp Shanks, New York. This is probably the unit he was in when discharged, and may have had nothing to do with his overseas service. For more on that subject, read the message in this forum, "Re: Determining Organization/Unit - David R. Berry 7/09/04"
Arm or Service: Deml is Detached Enlisted Men's List
Component: AUS is Army United States
For more on that subject, read the several messages in the thread in this forum which begins with, "Decoding a discharge - Peggy Powell 7/08/04"
Decorations: Dist Unit Badge GO 21 HG WD 43 is Distinguished Unit Badge, authorized by General Order 21 from the War Department 1944. (I'm not sure on the "HG", could it be "HQ" - Headquarters?)
His discharge should have his army serial number (ASN) on it. With that (and other info) you can apply for his service record at NPRC. If you are lucky enough that his records were not lost in the '73 fire, they will give you a much clearer picture of his path through the service. The web address for NPRC is: http://www.archives.gov/facilities/mo/st_louis/military_personnel_records/standard_form_180.htmlhttp://www.archives.gov/facilities/mo/st_louis/military_personnel_records/standard_form_180.html Hope this helps you get your bearings. Good luck.
