Roger M - Has anyone said that maybe your father was wounded or ill and when he recovered he might have been sent to another unit? Unless a soldier had some special training he most likely was not sent to his original unit but to the next unit that needed a body. Sounds bad doesn't it? But most of the men (boys) were just a number.
Another possibility is that he was sent home with a different unit. There it sort of seemed that when there was space men were assigned to that space and in the procedure had to have probably a Special Order. That order would have been given to the person it affected and another to the unit he was leaving. One should have been kept by the new one.Problem here is if the soldier did not keep that order it has probably vanished because I believe all Special Orders were destroyed at the end of the war. I can not verify the "all" but the General of the 78 ID did that and since so few are found it might be they all were. They are the ones that would reveal bad things about the men as well as their where abouts. Mary
