Lee Marvin was in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II and was in the Pacific. He was wounded and I think it was at Iwo Jima but not positive. I also think he won the bronze star. Search for his biography on the internet and it should be there.

James Arness (Marshall Matt Dillon) on "Gunsmoke" was also in World War II and was wounded. Many of the old Hollywood actors were World War II veterans, some of them were highly decorated during the war.
Actor Jimmy Stewart was a bomber pilot in Europe during World War II and flew many missions over Germany. He stayed in the Reserves after the war and retired from the Reserves as a Brig. General.
