Re: woodrow henry bennett KILLED INWW2
Nancy, I did a rudimentary search using online resources. What I found is set out below, along with a couple of resources I have used researching my own family. I am hopeful these will help you get started.
In the WWII Memorial registry database (which you can access at this web page:http://www.wwiimemorial.com/default.asp?page=registry.asphttp://www.wwiimemorial.com/default.asp?page=registry.asp) I found no "Woodrow Bennett". I did, however, find a "Henry W. Bennett". The info regarding this individual (listed with the ABMC) is:
Henry W. Bennett
Entered the Service From: North Carolina
Rank: Private First Class
Service: U.S. Army, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division
Died: Wednesday, November 22, 1944
Buried at: Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery
Location: Henri-Chapelle, Belgium
Plot: B Row: 12 Grave: 24
Awards: Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster
Thinking this may be "your man" (birth date, death date, residence match), I searched the Archives WWII enlistment database for his Army serial number: 34439987
It indicates this ASN was assigned to Henry W. Bennett, born 1913, and who resided in Davidson County, NC. You can access this info by doing the following:
Go to this web page:
Click the "Search" button in upper left corner;
When the screen changes, click the "People" link;
When the screen changes, click the "Title: World War II Army Enlistment Records, 6/1/2002 - 9/30/2002" link;
The next screen will give you a button to select "Electronic Army Serial Number Merged File, 1938-1946".
Follow futher instructions to access the database.
If this is the correct individual, you may be able to get his personnel record through the NPRC in St. Louis. (They had a disastrous fire in 1973 which destroyed many records.) Info on that resource can be found at this web page:
You can also send for his Individual Deceased Personnel File (IDPF). As others in this forum have addressed, the info found in an IDPF can be graphic. If you pursue this resource, you should be prepared for that possibility. Send your request to:
