CXN Verne R. Newman, SLCU-4, Apamama
About Apamama. This is a tiny islet in the Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands. When intelligence learned the Japanese had a small garrison there, it was planned for the Reconnaissance Battalion of the Fifth Marine Amphibious Corps to sieze Apamama simultaneously with the Marines' landing at Betio and the Army's occupation of Butaritari (Makin). At the last minute, the Japanese garrison at Apamama was pulled out - probably to reinforce Betio or Butaritari - and the Recon marines occupied the island without a shot fired. The natives spoke English but had difficulty pronouncing the letter "J" so that they referred to the Japanese as "Saps". The Americans got a real kick out of this.
Looks like your husband, Verne, took part in the Gilbert Islands Operation but nothing definite as yet as to his unit and ship.
