My father T/5 Kenneth George Reynolds of Benton Harbor/Eau Claire, Michigan was a Gunner 601;anti aircraft in Battery B, 573rd AAA Automatic Weapons Battalion. The 573rd was commanded by Ltc John Welch. Battalion formed in Aug/Sept 1943. Battalion departed USA 16 Dec 44 arrived ETO 22 Dec 44. Elements of 573rd were attached to 1st, 3rd, 7th & 9th Armies. Elements also attached to 5th Armored 26 Mar 45 to 30 Mar 45 relieving the 387th AAA AW BN SP. The 387th had been decimated by the Weirmach. The 573rd encountered very heavy close quarter attacks by German troops and 88mm guns. They also encountered the Weirmach's railroad gun. The 573rd crossed the Rhine at Wesel and, while attached to the 9th Army, liberated a con/pow camp at Brunswick, 75 mi from Berlin, housing 75- 100 Poles & Russians.
