1st Div. Normandy Invasion - researching my father's service
My father was Neil James Courtney (b.6/16/1924, d.1992), he served in the army as a private in the 1st infantry in WWII Normandy at Omaha Beach (I believe Omaha is correct). He was in the second wave of troops arriving. I was told that he may have been in the 18th infanrty or 1st Bat. of the 16th infantry, but not sure how to verify this.
I sent away for his military records, but were told they were destroyed in the fire. I do have his military service number if that will help. He served from 1/26/1943 to 10/19/1945. I was also told by siblings he was a sniper, and was hit by schrapnel and received a purple heart, and maybe also a silver star.
Is there a resource for finding out/verifying my dad's service, the unit and company he was in? I looked online for troop rosters and came up dry.
I'd appreciate any help at all, I'm at a brick wall.
Thanks very much.
