According to my Father's DD214 the 778th Tank Battalion departed on Sept. 5, 1944 and arrived on Sept. 15, 1944.Maybe some other ship left on Sept. 4, 1944.My Father told me the name of the ship he sailed on was the S.S. Monticello. According to some of my records the previous name of the ship was the Italian Luxury Liner, Conti Di Savoia. My father said they departed from Boston and that they arrived in Cherbourg, France. My Father was assigned to D Co. 3rd Platoon. He said he spent 6 months on the front lines. He was in one of the Units that took Metz.I was told by someone else in his Battalion that my Father's company rode in the Parade through Paris.
My Father did not get to come home from overseas until March 7, 1946 and arrived on March 16, 1944.I am not sure but I think he said he landed in New York. The name of the ship he came back on was the General Anderson.
I have a lot of information about the Battallion.Years ago I sent all of my information to George Nicholson. He was also in the 778th Tank Battalion.
