Hi,Here is your father-in-law's enlistment record as notated on the NARA site. It's not a complete one but with that imformation, my suggestion is to contact the Suffolk County Clerk in NY and the State Archives of NY to see if you can obtain his DD214 (discharge papers) and his enlistment information.His discharge papers and/or enlistment papers should tell you what units he was first attached to and last attached to.Also, if he had a military funeral, contact the regional VA where he is buried as well as the Sexton of the Cemetery and the funeral home that handled the burial as they may have some records.You could try to get his full military records from the NPRC but they will probably tell you that they burned.Keep after them if you have the time.Here is their website.Complete the Form 180.
