My uncle was born in Belfast. He was in the British army working as a mechanic on airplanes. German planes attacked, and Sam was hit in left arm by machine gun fire from the German planes. Indian medics drove him to the aid station in a truck--they amputed his arm on the way. He was sent from the aid station to a hospital in South Africa, where he spent many weeks. Then on to London. He met his wife while in the hospital in London--she was his nurse. His wounds happened while Rommel was attacking Tobruk.
