GARFISH and GATO subs AUSSIE COASTWATCHERS group M SPECIAL. SYDNEY STONEHOUSE
My father SYDNEY STONEHOUSE was in the top secret Australian COASTWATCHERS group that was taken to the SOLOMON ISLANDS and GUADALCANAL by AMERICAN SUBS. He was on the GATO and the GARFISH. Dad will be 90 in APRIL NEXT YEAR AND I AM TRYING TO GATHER A FAMILY TREE AND ANY OTHER INFORMATION FOR HIM SO IT CAN BE LEFT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.
He said at one time he was picked up by a PT boat that had a JOHN KENNEDY as part of the crew.
His group tried to keep two young American fly boys alive who crashed on their island. They carried them around on stretchers for ages.
The jap soldiers used to patrol all night trying to hunt them down and they had to hide in the jungle and move all the time as everytime they radioed out they would be hunted.
Dad said they called in a long range bomber to blast the japanese man hunting dogs on the island so the group had a better chance of survival.
The group was in two parts and the part with the two young Americans was captured and Dad tried to radio for permission to rescue but Port Moresby refused permission.
There was an Aussie chaop called Thompson with red hair who fought to the last to defend the young flyboys. The japanese made the men dig their own graves and then beheaded them. My father saw it all from the tree top where he was radioing out begging for permission to rescue the men.
There were 64,000 japs on the island and only 29 Australian reconnaisance men till the halof of the group were killed and then there were only 15 with my father in command as the lieutenant was killed under fire, and put Dad in charge before he died.
My father has never spoken much about his experiences and they took their toll on him with p.t.s.s. over the years.
If there is anyone who saw servic in that area and knows of the Coastwatchers or the M special group I would love to gather any info.
Apparently when Dad was on the PT boat they took photos of his group and Dad said he was in those photos.
It was when they were picked up to return from their last m ission.
They usually were dropped off at night by subs and took radios inh behind enemy lines where they reported troop movements, numbers, barges, supplies etc.
My P.O. box number is 463 Rockingham 6968 Western Australia.
