23rd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Troop A, 16th Armored & Normandy Campaign
Can anyone help me understand my father's part in the Normandy Campaign?
My Dad was an Army PFC in ETO-Central Europe, Normandy, Rhineland and Northern France according to the record. He was inducted 1 Sept 1943, was Mortar and SMG Expert 1/44. Jeep driver in 15th cavalry.
I have a picture dated 4 May 1944 of him with the 23rd cavalry reconnaissance squadron, Troop A (MECZ), and one picture with a 16 triangle patch on his shoulder. There was no information on the 23rd Cavalry, 16th armored on any of his papers. The Units listed were:
1.Troop C, 17th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron 1 Dec 1944-16 Jan 1945
2.Headquarters Company, 9th United States Army 16 Jan 1945-30 June 1945
3.Troop C of 15th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron 4 Sept 1945-24 Oct 1945
4.Company A, 893rd Tank Destroyer Battalion 14 Dec 1945 to 26 January 1946
I can't find information that supports the 23rd Cavalry reconnaissance squadron landed during the Normandy campaign. His service dates on his papers are wrong: It lists Date of Departure 14 July 1944, destination ETO, date of arrival 3 July 1944.He told me a long time ago he landed in Normandy at the "beach at the end."
Can anyone shed light on his part in the Normandy campaign or point me to a source that might help explain his unit in Normandy?Thank you and my apologies for the long-winded info.
