1253rd Service Command Unit, 1944
My grandfather was George Cecil “GC” Sutton (he died in 1994). He was a Private in the 1253rd Service Command Unit. He was inducted May 16, 1944 at Camp Beauregard, Louisiana. He was stationed in Camp Upton, NY, November 5, 1944 and received an Honorable discharge on November 17, 1944 at Ft. Sam Houston, TX. He said his command unit was sent overseas, but he and a friend were hospitalized with the flu the day before they shipped out. He said everybody in the command unit was killed when they got off the ship. Does anybody have any info about the command unit and where they were sent? Also, my grandfather had a group photo of these men that he kept in the safe, but my grandmother destroyed it (she had Alzheimer’s disease and went through a phase where she destroyed all photos). I was hoping to track down another copy of the picture.
