40th Infantry Division was activated March 1941 and inactivated in April 1946. Served in the Pacific during the war. The division was allotted three campaign credits (Bismarck Archipelago, Luzon & Southern Philippines). Campaign credits vary among division's components.
Division was reactivated in September 1950 and served in Korea from April 1951 to June 1954. Reverted to state control (California National Guard) 30 June 1954. Except for the 160th Infantry and 143d Field Artillery Battalion, composition of the division's combat arms elements was significantly different.
