My dad started his military service as a member of the ROTC in college. In September 1942, he was stationed at Camp Roberts, California. He attended Fort Sill, Oklahoma Officer Training School. In February 1943 he was stationed at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. In July 1943 Shreveport, LA. September 1943 saw him in Camp Pickett, VA. before being sent over to England in April 1944. In March, 1945, my father was awarded an Air Medal and several battle stars for service in Germany. He served with the 187th Medium Field Artillery Battalion in the European Theatre of Operations as an aerial and ground artillery observer in adjustment of artillery fire. He completed over 50 missions as artillery observer in combat. He participated in 5 major campaigns including; Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe.He had achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant by the time he received an honorable discharge, on December 19, 1945.
