Have you tried getting is service record from the NARA? They did have a fire and lost records but some survived. If his didn't then contact the County Veteran's Affairs office in the state he first lived after his discharge. Most Veterans filed a copy of thier DD214 with that office to help with recieving that states' and Federal G.I. Benefits they were entitled too.
