My father was a mortarman in the 32nd 127th Co., G. His MOS was 607. He was made SGT in May 1944 shortly before the Aitape/Driniumor River campaign. A friend of his who was in his squad told me that Dad was a gunner in a light mortar brigade. My question is would a mortar brigade have a machine gunner? for protection? As a Sgt wouldn't he be more in line with directing or running the mortar equipment? men? Would there be 1 squad of martarmen in a company or would there be more. How big is a brigade?
Can anyone explain to me how mortarmen and their operations worked?
Dad's friend also told me they were moving a large (cannot remember the mm) gun over the mt's (in the Philipines I believe). Would a light mortar brigade have a large gun?
Still trying to understand Dad's war.
