Re: USS Indianapolis survivor list
My Uncle Mac, my Mother's Brother, was on the USS Indianapolis when it went down on July 30,1945. He was Lost at Sea. His family never knew if he was killed when the torpedoes hit or later in the water. We pray if he had to die, he died instantly. He had just turned 21 in March, 1945.
I wasn't born then but I feel like I knew Uncle Mac through the stories from his family and reading so much about the tragedy of the Indy.
I was blessed to travel to Indianapolis a few weeks ago and tour the Indiana War Museum and see the USS Indianapolis Memorial. I met a lady there who knew the daughter of one of the Survivors, James O'Donnell. I was able to contact him and his wife Mary, through his daughter. I just received the book written by the survivors and/or their families, "Only 317 Survived." Mrs. Mary was so nice and had Mr. James and 4 more of the survivors sign it for me.
I have made a scrap book of the Indy and as much information I can find. If it's okay with you, I'd like to print out your statement and add it to the book.
