Re: WWII Ace and Silver Star recipient
The email response I received from Patsy Robertson (AFHRA) on October 21 stated that she looked at the GO's for the 13th AAF and War Department for the period of June-November 1943 and found nothing for William Wells. When she said the 347th FG was not credited with any aerial victories in June 1943 she was correct in the way that they were determined and assigned. The credits were not usually assigned to the FG but instead to the Fighter Squadron under the FG. If you look at the Aerial Victory list you will see that on a few occasions the AVC was given to some FG. One book I looked at about activities of the AAF during WWII in the Pacific shows that the 70th FS had switched to P-38s in early April 1943 which would leave the 12th FS and possibly another smaller unit still flying the P-39s.
