I did not state that the GCM was 'automatic'...I said it was presented when a guy was discharged or reenlisted; I said it was no 'biggie', meaning compared to the Purple Heart or higher awards. My husband was a retired military man, (he had 5) as well as my son, and I had 7 brothers in WWII who ALL received the GCM for just obeying their sworn oaths.
Also, for what it's worth, I correspond with a guy in the St. Louis area who has access to WWII personnel records; though many of them WERE destroyed in a fire, many have been reconstructed. I have my brothers' records from him. He does not charge for this service either. He has access to the records because he is an official researcher for his Father's WWII unit.
Just sayin'...
