Greetings from Fort Worth, TX, Juliette !
The SS Saml. Huntington was one of five ships lost as a part of the allied invasion of Anzio, Italy, which started 1-22-44.
The reference states only :
"29 Jan 1944, SS Samuel Huntington (Liberty Ship), while unloading ammunition (off Anzio Beach), was hit (by a radio guided missile), and later sank."
A second ship lost the same day was
HMS Spartan, which was hit at 1950 hours, and capsized.
If you will enter the ship name under your SEARCH (I use Google), you will find an interesting menu, which may provide more insight for you.
I hope this helps.
With best regards,
Louie Franklin Turner
We had a couple of Ard families in the old neighborhood in South Fort Worth before the war. Nice folks.
