On this the original Memorial Day, readers might be interested in hearing about my book
"After the Liberators: A Father's Last Mission, A Son's Lifelong Journey" (Parkway, 1999). It memorializes my dad, 2nd Lt. Wm. C. McGuire, a Navigator aboard a 392nd BG B24 Liberator of the 8th Air Force shot down March 18, 1944 on Friedrichshafen, Germany mission.
The book tells the story of this costly air battle (group lost 14 B24s)and of how I first came to retrace the details in the mid 1990s. It also talks about the continuing impact of this one death on an American family and how the children of our war dead share our legacy with all Americans. This story won strong endorsements from James Patterson, Len Deighton, Roger Freeman and Richard Snow, editor of American Heritage.
The books contains a useful index, bibliography and special appendix for WWII researchers covering all theaters and services. Also, my first child, Wm C. McGuire III was born on this date in 1966. I now am proud dad of 4 and happy grandad of five. Remember. Bill McGuire II
