Three divisions took part in the assault and seizure of Iwo Jima. They were 3d Marine Division (3d, 9th, 12th & 21st Marines), 4th Marine Division (14th, 23d, 24th & 25th Marines) and 5th Marine Division (13th, 26th, 27th & 28th Marines). Iwo Jima is the 5th Marine Division's only operation.
Disbanded at the end of World War II, the division was reconstituted and activated in 1966 and trained replacements at Camp Pendleton, California during the Vietnam Era. Two of the division's regiments - 26th & 27th Marines - and two battalions of 13th Marines - 1st & 2d - saw service in Vietnam.
