January 1942 Convoy, US to Australia
On January 12, 1942, a convoy left San Francisco bound for Melbourne, Australia. The ships in the convoy were President Monroe, President Coolidge, light cruiser USS Phoenix (acting as escort for the convoy) and Mariposa, a former luxury liner of the Matson Line that had been hastily refitted as a troopship.President Coolidge, Phoenix, and Mariposa arrived in Melbourne on February 1, 1942, but the President Monroe did not go to Australia at that time. She was detached from the convoy somewhere en route and called into Suva in Fiji in late January (another source states that she was escorted into Suva by HMS Achilles, arriving there approximately 28 January), before returning to San Francisco. . ."
Is there anyone who is reading this who can tell me more about that convoy, and especially about the Monroe? Were there U. S. troops aboard the Monroe? What happened to them?Etc., etc.Any additional information about any of the ships and/or troops who left San Francisco that day will be greatly appreciated.
