The 28th infantry division did not assault the beaches at Normandy on D-Day. They fought in the Normandy campaign, but did not enter combat until the middle of July, some 45 days after the initial D-Day landings.
Is it possible your subject could have been with another unit on D-Day, being transfered to Co. E, 109th Inf., 28th ID later on in the war?
