I discovered this site few days ago, and I'd like to say something about the events that occurred on May 14th, 1945. As you all know, Croatian Ustashe movement participated in WW2 on Germany's side. Independence State of Croatia (Nezavisna Drzava Hrvatska) became the last European axis to capitulate. The British and American governments, which were directly involved in this episode, have shown themselves as anxious as the actual perpetrators of the crime to offer only a blank page to the judgment of history. In the spring of 1945, the Croatians had been trying to find someone to surrender to, but since both Washington and London had commited themselves to Tito's Partisans and the Russians, this attempt was not crowned with succes. At this time, the Croats still had sixteen strong divisions in the field, a force of about 250 000 men, more than enough to wipeout Tito and his much publicised Partisans, whose only real victories during the war were achieved in the pages of the Anglo-American press. Croatian Army (Ustashe and Domobrani), along with the civilians, dicided to surrender to the British in Austria. It turned out to be a huge mistake! Altogether there must have been a total of close to 500 000 people, military and civilian combined, heading towards the frontier to meet the British Army. These Croatians were intent upon only one thing, escaping the murder squads of Tito. Indeed, the British did let the Croatian leaders believe that they would accept the surrender of the Croat armed forces. Once the British were sure that the Croats were disarmed, they began to herd the unarmed masses back across the border. Partisan units, which had come up during the night, had taken position in the nearby woods and opened fire on the refuges as the British forced them back over the frontier line. So well coordinated was this joint Anglo-Partisan action, that thousands of Croatians of all categories, but mostly unarmed soldiers were shot down on that part of the Bleiburg field which lies within the frontiers of the Tito's former state. This was only the beginning...
Elsewhere, thousands upon thousands of Croat soldiers and civilian refugees also surrendered to the British military authorities on Austrian territory. The procedure was the same. The British totally disarmed them, then jammed them into railway cars and military vehicles like sheep destined for the slaughterhouse!
Although Tito and his aides actually carried out this "Opetation Slaughterhouse", the British military authorities bear a moral responsibility. The British were obligated by the Geneva Convention and by laws of war to accept the Croatian surrender and to give the retreating Croat Army and civilian population sanctuary to protect them from Partisan vengeance.
Tito's Partisans killed over 200 000 Croatian unarmed soldiers and civilians in the window of only few days. This was one of the biggest war crimes in history.
I must say that I'm not a supporter of the Croatia's Ustasha regime during the WW2, but I am a supporter of Croatia as an independent state. And I'm not trying to discuss who was right of wrong during the war, I'm just saying that the British war criminals could at least apologize to Croatia adn it's people for causing this massacre... Don't you think?
