History of the company pretty well parallels that of the battalion. Constituted in the Army of the United States as 81st Armored Regiment (Medium Tanks) and organized 1 October 1941 at Fort Knox, Kentucky as an element of 5th Armored Brigade (brigade later expanded and redesignated 5th Armored Division). Moved to Camp Cooke, California August 1942. To Pine Camp, New York June 1943 and to Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania December 1943. Regiment reorganized September 1943, Regimental Headquarters & Headquarters Company and 1st and 2d Battalions (less elements) consolidated and redesignated 81st Tank Battalion, remaining assigned to 5th Armored Division. Participated in II Armored Corps Maneuvers in the Mojave Desert August to November 1942 and Second Army Maneuvers in Tennessee March to June 1943. Departed New York Port of Embarkation 11 February 1944 for duty in the European Theater (ETO), arriving in England 24 February where it equipped and trained prior to landing in France 25 July. Returned to the United States October 1945. Battalion Headquarters arrived at Boston Port of Embarkation 7 October and entire battalion was inactivated at Camp Myles Standish, Boston, the following day. Campaign Participation Credits: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe. How any of the above applies to your man depends on his dates of service with the company and battalion and other factors.
Technician Fourth Grade (expressed T4, T/4, Tec4, Tech4, etc.) was an enlisted specialist rating entitled to the base pay of a Sergeant, 4th Pay Grade. He was a company clerk.
