Thanks for your help. I've sent in a request for his MPF to NARA but haven't heard anything. I also sent in a request for replacement medals (we only have his good conduct medal), as well, and for that request I was told his MPF was destroyed in the 'fire'.
Yeah, the whole thing is just confusing, we have a walther pp (german officers gun i think), which he probably traded for (or maybe took off of someone while in the 423rd). The other items we have are a 4th army patch, the 75th inf. div. patch, the 'western aa command' patch (I dont know what that one is), and an unidentified lapel pin (i dont have it with me, but its blue/silver, with a couple of swords on it, and something, probably latin, across the top).
I'm going to send NARA copies of the separation report and the 'letter' we have regarding campaign credit for rhineland. those are the only official papers we have.
I requested info on the 3429th unit histories from the NARA in Maryland, and they got back to me but they want alot of money for reproduction. I figured I would wait to see what NARA in St. Louis could do for me first.
Its confusing, yet interesting. I guess it gives me something to do in my spare time!
