Re: Court Marshall for Demotion?
Hello Ken: No, you did not have to be court-martialed to be demoted-at least not in the Army. I was transferred into an outfit as a T4. The Table of Orginization for my particular MOS called for a grade lower(T5). For over eight months our CO kept asking me to agree to a demotion without prejudice and to accept the lower grade. I refused. I was then sent off for separate duty and while there a directive was sent from the CINCPOA allowing units to reduce without approval or any other reason any enlisted man whose rank was higher than the Table called for. As I was just before being transferred out my CO promised to hold off until transfer was effective. Unfortunately he was arrested by the MPs and was in the clink when the orders were put on his desk. I was demoted to Private, promoted to Corporal and transferred to the new outfit in about 3 days. As rates were "frozen" in the new outfit I had a long wait for promotion. This is a long story to answer a short question. I'm sure there were other ways to be reduced in rank without court-martial. Regards, Charles Mullen
