Re: Royal Canadian Engineers SOE in Dunkirk?
This sounds more like the Dieppe Raid which was heavilly populated by Canadian forces. Many died and most survivors ended up as POWs.
Many in the Canadian Forces were volunteers so came from many backgrounds.Sounds like your man may have been an Irish national which would explain the Irish going to bat for him.Ireland was a neutral so their appeal would carry weight.
One of my great uncles had been in Canada for 20 years and came over with the Canadian forces. They were landed in the west of France around the time of Dunkirk but were quickly taken off again and sent to England.
He was later wounded in Dieppe but survived and returned to Canada at the end of the war.
