John P. Sims Lieutenant Junior Grade, U.S. Navy 0-299443 United States Naval Reserve Entered the Service from: Texas Died: January 8, 1946 Missing in Action or Buried at Sea Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery Manila, Philippines Awards: Purple Heart
The Gov't makes a FOD (Finding of Death) one-year-and-a-day after the serviceman is declared missing, therefore your target date of loss is January 7, 1945.
For the benefit of the others who read this page, the designation VF means V=Heavier than Air.F=Fighter.
Several Carrier Air Groups were engaged in fighting in the SWPA during January '45.My references show that missions on 7JAN45 were specific to operations on LUZON.
Once you determine his assignment to a VF, it will be a simple matter to track the combat history of the unit and the carrier he was assigned to.
Might I recommend that you contact the Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola. They have a computer terminal in the lobby of their reference room which has biographical data on Naval Aviators. There may be a reference for Sims, which would tell when and where he received his wings, and what unit he served with.
Good Luck in your search, and let us know how it turns out.
