Phillipine Islands, Island of Samar

Looking for info on the Island of Samar,during the 1942-1945.My father served there in the US Navy and I was informed that his duty was that of a Commando.I cant locate any info with the Navy having Commandos there, But understand they were trained in CA. befor going to the Phillipines.
