Hi Louiseann,
Great to hear from you. I wonder if your grandfather knew mine? My grandfather served in all three forces during his time. He bagan in the Royal Navy and then through 'need of troops' he was transfered in to the Army. His had a short spell in the R.A.F as a grounds man during his wait for the full transferral. He used to tell me some great stories about his service days.
He saw service in Bumra, South Africa amoung many other counties. He once said 'i've not seen all the world, but i have seen half of it and i never want to see it again! It must have been hard times for the soldiers then, fighting sometimes in very poorly conditions and see all that blood shead - he told me he lost many many friends.
I have not really done much reseaching in to his name (BEST)as of yet. I have been researching my fathers side (RISEBOROUGH)uptil now. I do have my grandfather Bests Service records thou (Both Navy & Army)They are lovely to own and if possible it would give you a great starting point with your searching if you could get hold of your grandfathers??? There are many people out there that will look in the PRO KEW records for you (for a price of corse) if you can not get to the building yourself? I have a contact who specializes in finding service records and has many years of expeience in this field. I will e-mail you directly with his details. Check your mailing now.
Best Wishes, Merle
