I've been working for a while on my grandfathers search, but have come up with little. I haven't heard anything from St. Louis yet, not even to say "sorry, those records were part of the fire." Can someone possibly take a guess at what military installation my grandfather may have been at (and why) by virtue of his location....
Fairbanks AK abt 1944 Anchorage abt 1947 Asbury Park NJ late 1940s (lived off base housing in A.P.) BREMERHAVEN GERMANY ??? (year unknown)
And why he would have been at these.... Sandia Base, NM abt 1950..(Mom recalls hearing WHITESAND??) Ft Mac Arthur CA abt 1959
Grandmother says that: Early in his career he was a tailgunner in a b24 or 25. He was shot down behind enemy lines. (I've no idea what country.) He was a doctor of defective hearing and speech. Helped invent/invented a piece to go on hearing aids to keep them from frosting/freezing in winter. He sold or gave the patent to the military. Story was in Stars and Stripes. (when my mom was "about" 11. she was born nov-42) ...Naturally (as most people would like to think) my mothre and grandmother maintain that he was "high up in sensitive issues" while in the military.
Mom says that: She was about 2 their 1st time in AK. She was about 5 their 2nd time in AK. She was still a toddler when they were in NJ. She remembers dog races near the cheena river. Alaska was not part of the US when they were there. If there was some type of military alert, that they had 15-20 minutes to be prepared to board a plane to go back to Alaska.
My grandfather was: CHARLES C. PAYNE b. Aug-10-1919 IL d. may-9-1975 CO Mil. Serial# 6664691 SS# 315-14-0521 Served about 21 yrs. (my estimate is 1939-1960)
