HDQ CO 60th Armored Inf BN 9th Armored Div
What a great message board!!
I am looking for any help in finding information on the 'HDQ CO 60th Armored Inf. BN 9th Armored Div.' (as inscribed on the headstone of PFC Leon G. ENGLEMAN)
Leon was my husband's grandfather. He was KIA on 3/14/45.I have been able to find very little information regarding Leon. His records were destroyed in the fire of '73.I did receive some documentation of when they transferred his remains from Henry Chapelle, Belgium to the States for reburial.
Here are some of my questions:
What is a Headquarters Company? Is this different from any other Armored Infantry Battalion?
Where was Leon when he was killed?I believe it could possibly be during the Ludendorff Bridge capture (Mar. 7, 1945). The 9th Armored took that bridge, but does that mean that all of the 9th was there?
His cause of death was listed as 'SFW Legs', what is SFW?
And my last question.....he served in the European Campaign from Dec. 1944 until he died in March 1945. Would he be entitled to the European Campaign Medal? (I didn't know if there was a minimum time of service to receive the medal).
Thank you all for the great list.I hope someone can help, it would mean alot to my mother-in-law to learn more about all of this. She was only a toddler when her father was killed.
