William Harold Smith, Btry c 863 FA Bn,
Seeking any information of these battles that my father was listed in. I know that the above is the company he was with upon demobilization. He exited the Army at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.
Battles and Campaigns I have lsited as:
Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Sothern France, Rhineland, Central Europe.
I know that he was captured and a POW, escaping with 5 or 6 others, they made their ways through the woods, surrounded by Germans. There was a Lt. with them that would not keep quiet and shouted orders. Fearing capture, he was knocked out, was the only way to get and keep him quiet so that they could avoid recapture. It is supposed that this is the reason that my father lost his Sergeant's Stripes and busted down to PFC. I have nto been able to find any information thus far on this incident. I know that this is a long shot, but am looking for any information from anyone that has heard t his story told from family members. I am still requesting records andinformation from military sources, but because of the fire in St. Louis there is lettle to be found.
He is also listed with the following decorations and Citations:
European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon w/1 Silver Battle Star, Bronze Service Arrowhead, 4 Overseas Service Bars, 1 Service Stripe, Good Conduct Medal
If you have any information, or know where I can find more detailed records, please contact me.
