Mathers, Charles of Lurgan, Co Armagh, NIR
Here’s what I know.
My Great Grandfather was Charles MATHERS, b. abt. 1810 in North Ireland, probably COI but maybe Presbyterian. In 1858 he was listed as a farmer. Married about 1834 to Rose J CARRICK, b est 1805, also North Ireland, religion unkown. I was unable to find any record in PRONI.
Their son, Charles MATHERS, b. about 1835 in Lurgan, Co Armagh, NIR. He married in 1858 to Elizabeth WALKER, b. Lurgan, Co Armagh, NIR, Dtr. of Benjamin WALKER. He was a gunner in the 10th Brigade of the Royal Garrison Artillery. According to the UHF database they were both from Ballymacmaine and of the COI and married in the MAGHERALIN Parish by James Murphy witnessed by James Mathers and Margetta Lawther. I have their marriage Certificate.
Some of their children were born outside of NIR while he was in the military service. Thus my Grandfather, William John MATHERS, was born in Oct 1874 atPicklecomb Fort, Plymouth, England. In 1920 he and his family were transferred by the United Fruit Co. to Boston, Massachusetts and he was Senior Captain until retirement in 1939. He married at Albert St Presbyterian Church to Adelaide Elizabeth WILSON, b 27 Nov 1874 in Belfast, Co Down, NIR, dtr of Samuel WILSON of Richhill, Co Armagh, NIR and Ellen LAVERY of Lurgan, Richhill, Co Armagh (who died in Belfast 16 Jan 1916). I have William’s Birth Certificate and the Marriage Certificate for William and Adelaide’s marriage.
Most of Charles and Elizabeth’s five daughters migrated in the 1920s to Australia or New Zealand after marrying Duncan Fowler, Joseph Graham, William Stanley Irwin, Dr. Thomas Scott and Robert Burns.
Any leads or contacts would be appreciated.I am most interested in documenting the Vital Records of Charles and Rose and of Charles and Ellen.
