Re: Maxim & Butchko in Austria
Prior to 1918 "Austria" was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and inc. all or parts of the modern day countries of Austria, Hungary, Poland, Ukraine, Czech Rep, Slovakia, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Roumania, Bosnia and "Yugoslavia."AND had 12 official langauges.
One question is were "George" and "Mary" married in the US or in Europe?Did they come to the US as husband and wife or as single people? If you know that AND the date when they entered the US then you MAY be able to find their ship manifest(s) and determine where they came from.
There are several "Georges" MAXIMs listed at Ellis Is., coming from that area listing their ethnicity as German OR Slovak. What is now Slovakia was a part of northern Hungary during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
As far as BUTCHKO that is an Americanized version of a surname and could be: Buchko Buschko Bucsko Buczko Buscko Busczko Bussko Buszko Butschko Buchka Buchto Buschka Those are found when BUTCHKO is entered at the Ellis Is. web page.
The point is that if they were born in what is now Austria then Austria would be the place to find info. And if they were born in a part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire that is now a part of one of the other mentioned countries then that country would be the place to find info.
