James Cowlthorp, Sr. born ca. 1778
My father-in-law recently gave us a copy of "The Cowlthorp/Colthorp Family- Eight Generations 1778-1981- Descendants of James Cowlthorp, Sr. 1778-1846."
The book speculates that James Cowlthorp, Sr. could be the son of Michael Calthorpe and Rebecca Briant. LDS records for Norfolk contain a family group with a son, James, which could possibly be the right one. The christening date is in agreement with a birthdate of ca. 1778 and the spellings of the name are consistent with the variations in use connected with James, Sr. and his descendants.
Norfolk:
"Michael Colthorpe and Rebacca Bryant, married 20 May 1771, Norwich, Saint John De Sepulchre.
Mary Colthorp, dau. of Michael Colthorp and Rebecca, christened 8 Mar. 1772, norwich, Saint John De Depulchre.
John Colthorpe, son of Michael Colthorpe and Rebecca, christened Mar. 1777, Norwich, Saint Michael.
James Colthrope, son of Michael Colthrope and Rebecca, christened 6 June 1779, Norwich, Saint Julian.
Elizth. Calthorpe, dau. of Michael Calthorpe and Rebecca Briant, christened 26 June 1785, Saint Julian."
Can anyone confirm that "our James" belongs to this family? James' grandson George wrote that the Cowlthorps came from Norfolk. Records indicate that James emigrated to Canada from Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. He served in the 76th Regiment of Foot. He married Ellen (Eleanor) ca. 1814-1815 and had 6 children: Richard, James Jr., Susanna, Isaac, Mary Ann, and Samuel.
