GILBERT FROM BRISTOL TO CANADA 1839/50
Hello troops my GGG Grand Father George Thomas Gilbert emigrated to Canada.Apparently he didn't like it and returned to the family home in Shirehampton Glouctershire. Bristol [near Shirehampton] was a well known departure point for migrants to the new world.
George Thomas GILBERT was a wanderer, probably an itinerant farm worker. This is illustrated by the facts that he was married at Midsomer Norton, daughter Emily was born at Litton, sons William born East Brent, George at Bristol and his work at Iron Acton, were all within a 20 mile radius of Bristol. It is also thought by some that he also worked in the midlands of England.
Given this wanderlust it is not surprising that he and his family migrated to Canada somewhere between 1839 and 1851. He did not like that country and returned with his family to England.
The years in Canada may account for the difference in the children’s ages (four years between William and Annie). There is also the possibility that George married twice.
After several years back in England, George Thomas GILBERT (50) packed his bags again and with his children Emily (20), William (18), Annie (12) and young George (8) headed for Australia
Cheers
