I found a book called "Little Foreign Devil" by Desmond Power which had a terrific description of life in Tietsin in the period you are interested in.I searched the web just now, and found numerous places it could be purchased.Another thing you could do is try the California State University at http://library.csun.edu/OldChinaHands/http://library.csun.edu/OldChinaHands/
They have an archive on non-chinese living in Tuentsin with photos etc.
You should also broaden your investigations to Harbin.Harbin was a Russian city in China built to service the Trans Siberian Railway (now known as the Chinese Eastern Railway or CER).After the Russian Revolution, a large number of Russians left Harbin and moved to Tientsin.They then migrated further south to Shanghai.It is highly probable that your ancesters started off in Harbin.
