Diane, do you have anything regarding Paul Crawley? He was, among other things, credited with "introducing Eskimo Pies to China" in the early teens. The other things including exhibiting an American Indian in China, owning the first movie house and trolley car lines in Shanghai, brothels, and exporting/importing opium to the U.S. Not his better side.He was tried in the U.S. Courts in Shanghai in 1932 for smuggling opium on board the USS Chaumont. (Apparently a VERY big deal at the time). He started out with the American Tobacco Company, represented the General Film Corporation, reportedly controlled the ice cream business for a while, and ran a casino in Harbin. His brother, Knight, was caught for dealing guns to warlords in 1937.Great family connections, I know, but it should make interesting reading. My brother have a photo album belonging to my grandfather, but can't seem to find it.I'm hoping to find something more about him in China.
My grandmother fled Russia in 1916 to China where she met him.My dad and his sister were both born there.Unfortunately, everyone has passed who I could ask for more info. Thanks for looking through your things; any references would be appreciated.Annette (Crawley)Limoges
