Also it will be helpful to place a reserach surname in the heading of your query.
Tell me, please: did Mike originally have a different surname than PROTIC?
He immigrated between 1910 and 1917. So he took citizenship between 1915 and 1920. Possibly you could locate his citizenship documents and there find the date of arrival. Then on ship manifest would be the place of origin and the Croatia place of his family's residence.
The 1930 Census does give Croatian as the family's spoken language.
KARAREVIC would be an unusual surname. Is it possibly KOVACEVIC?
