Some of the Greek lines involved came through the heiress Alice de Champagne. Her father Henri II C. de Champagne d.1197, incidentally, was the son of Henri I C. de Champagne and Marie de France and so was not only allied closely to the Dukes of Bretagne but to the French royal house as well. Alice's mother,Isabel d'Anjou Queen of Jerusalem d.1208 was the daughter of Almeric I d'Anjou King of Jerusalem 1126-1173 and Marie Comnena. Both of her parents had Greek blood. Almeric I was the son of Fulk C. d'Anjou and Melusina d.1161. Melusina was the daughter of Baldwin II of Jerusalem and Morphia of Melitene, a Comnenus relative. So you see the royal line of Jerusalem had married a Greek princess by the second reign. Marie Comnena was completely Greek or relatively so. Her father was John Comnenus d.1174 and I'd LOVE for anyone to tell me who her mother was! You'd think that a Greek princess who married a King of Jerusalem would be so well documented that it would be easy to find out who her mother was but I have not been able to do so. John Comnenus, on the other hand, is well documented. His father was Andronicus Comnenus d.1142. And his mother was Irene Rhodocanakis 1109-1162.
Andronicus was the son of John Emperour of the East 1088-1143 and Prisca (Irene) of Hungary d.1153(?). John Emperour was the son of Alexius I Emperour of the East 1048-1118 who m.1080 Irene Ducas. And Prisca (Irene) was the daughter of St.Ladislas I of Hungaryd.1095 and Adelaide of Zahringen.
Irene Rhodocanakis 1109-1162 was the daughter of Andronicus Rhodocanakis 1068-1144 and Theodora Tarchaniotes 1073-1109.
Andronicus Rhodocanakis was the son of John Rhodocanakis 1044-1113 who m.1066 Anna Tornica 1046-1099. And his wife Theodora was the dau. of Michael Tarchaniotes and Anna Dermokaita.
Adelaide of Zahringen was the dau. of Berthold I D of Zahringen and Rixa of Suabia.
Irene Ducas was the dau. of Andronicus Ducas d.1080 and Maria of Bulgaria. Andronicus Ducas's parents were John Ducas and Maria. John Ducas's father was Andronicus Ducas.
Maria of Bulgaria was the dau. of Trojan of Bulgaria the son of Samuel King of Bulgaria d.1014 the son of Sisman I King of Bulgaria d.976.
Alexius I Emperour of the East was the son of John (or Isaac) Comnenus the son of Manuel Comnenus c.1081 and Anna. Manuel was the son of Isaac Comnenus and Maria Erotica.
Also note:St.Ladislas of Hungary was the son of Bela I of Hungary and Rixai of Poland.
Anno Tornica was the child of Leo Tornica c.1047 and Theodora d'Allas.
It should be clear from this that Alice of Champagne, despite her typically French name, was mostly Greek and Eastern European.
