what are naming customs if a child is deemed illegitimate?

If a male child is designated as illegitimate in the late 1700's and early 1800's what happens to the normal naming customs? Does he still take the name of the father, the name of his mother, or maternal grandfather or what? Does his name change if the mother marries after his birth?Thanks in advance for any clarification you can give.
