I don't know about your family, but a "British Subject" used to be anyone who was born in a colony of Britain (i.e. England). My father was born in London in 1907, educated in France, then he came to Canada in 1929, but he was immediately accepted into Canada because he was a "British Subject". After Canada became a sovereign entity (separate constitution) in 1982, Canadians were no longer "British Subjects". Where Canadians were once used to be ushered through British Customs, after 1982 they have been forced to become one of the "masses" from all non-British countries trying to enter the country.
